Dallas County

Autumn at the Arboretum*

Where: Dallas Arboretum, 8525 Garland Road, Dallas
When: September 21–November 3, 2024
Hours: Open daily from 9am–5pm with timed admission
Key features:
• The theme for this year’s fall festival is Texas Town, with a focus on pioneer life. Six pumpkins houses: a log cabin, a saloon, farmstead, general store, sod house and a one-room schoolhouse—each with their own historical marker. This year, look for these vignettes with 100,000 (yes, one hundred thousand!) pumpkins, squash and gourds set up—not at the Pecan Grove but—at the Lakeside Exhibit Area, which is closest to White Rock Lake.
• The festival includes much more fun, including the returning Mommy and Me Mondays and Tiny Tot Tuesdays, held from 10am–2pm every week September 23–October 29. Come for the petting zoo, story time featuring Texas tall tales, Kindermusik and bubbles. See the full entertainment lineup here.
• For maximum playtime, take the kids over to the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden for more playtime.
Cost: Included with general admission: $22 adults, $13 children, under 2 free. Get BOGO tickets on Wednesdays (and join the Guided Pumpkin Hike on Wednesdays at 10am). Other special events may require additional ticket. Pumpkins are available for purchase separately in the pumpkin patch.

NorthPark Pumpkin Patch

Where: CenterPark Garden at NorthPark Center, 8687 N. Central Expressway, Dallas

Hours: Same as the shopping center hours: 10am–8pm Monday–Saturday and noon–6pm Sunday
Key features: While you’re out shopping for new long-sleeve clothes for your kids, stop by the shopping center’s garden for this picturesque pumpkin exhibit.
• It’s got a wishing well, a gnome village, and lots of seasonal plantings, so we love it as an easy, ideal spot for a photo op.
• Bring the kids each Saturday at 11am when the Bookmarks librarians will be hosting Halloween- and autumn-themed storytimes and book giveaways.
• And come back on Saturday, October 19 for Creepy Critters. The 1pm presentation is about snakes, lizards, bugs and amphibians.
• Any day you’re visiting, feel free to toss your spare coins in the patch’s wishing well. At the patch’s close in November, all the coins from the wishing well and around NorthPark will be donated to Community Partners of Dallas (CPD). Want to get more involved with CPD? Join the annual fundraiser, Change is Good, in the patch on Sunday, October 13.

Fritz Park Pumpkin Patch

When: Weekends October 5–November 3, 2024
Hours: Saturday 10am–5pm, Sunday noon–5pm. Closed weekdays.
Key features: This same destination hosting a petting zoo every summer for the last 30-plus years also has, for the last four years, offered this neighborhood pumpkin patch. Bring your kids to:
• Pick out a pumpkin—they’re all $10, with a portion going to Irving Animal Services. Perhaps the cutest activity is planting the “Magic Pumpkin Seed” and then returning to find it fully grown and ready for decorating with paints.
• Kids activities range from a hay maze to Halloween-themed fun like the “Creepy Bone Dig” to “Spooky Bowling.”
• Most exciting for the kids, though: The petting zoo animals will be back, as well as pony rides, pig races and chickens pecking away at their own pumpkins.
• Snap photos at the fall vignettes decorated with square bales and scarecrows, and of course the red barn facade at the opening of the park.
Cost: $4 for Irving residents; $5 for nonresidents; free for children under 2. All activities are included with admission except for the petting zoo feed cup ($1); pony ride ($3, for kids under 70 pounds), and the Magic Pumpkin Seed ($3). If you know your kids wants to participate in all three things, save a couple dollars by getting the child’s combo package for $10.
