How to Keep Ants, Mosquitoes, and Other Summer Pests Away

Summer brings sunshine, backyard barbecues, and plenty of time outdoors—but it also brings unwanted visitors. From ants and mosquitoes to flies and other insects, pests can quickly become a nuisance if left unchecked. Fortunately, a few simple preventative measures can help keep your home and yard comfortable all season long.

Eliminate Standing Water

Mosquitoes thrive in standing water, making it important to regularly inspect your property for areas where water collects. Empty bird baths, flower pot saucers, kiddie pools, and clogged gutters, and be sure to change pet water frequently. Even small amounts of standing water can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Keep Up With Yard Maintenance

Overgrown grass, weeds, and dense landscaping provide shelter for insects and other pests. Regular mowing, trimming shrubs, and removing yard debris can make your property less inviting to unwanted guests. Keeping mulch away from your home's foundation can also help discourage ants and other crawling insects.

Seal Entry Points Around Your Home

Tiny cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and foundations can provide easy access for pests. Inspect your home for openings and use weather stripping or caulk to seal them. Repair torn window screens and make sure doors close tightly to help keep insects where they belong—outside.

Maintain Your Pool and Outdoor Spaces

Pools are a great way to enjoy the summer, but neglected water features can attract bugs and mosquitoes. Keep your pool properly balanced and circulating, and regularly remove debris from the water. Be sure to check fountains, bird baths, and decorative water features as well to prevent stagnant water from accumulating.

Store Food Properly

Summer gatherings often mean more food and more opportunities for ants and flies to appear. Keep food covered when dining outdoors, wipe up spills promptly, and make sure trash cans have tight-fitting lids. Inside the home, store pantry items in sealed containers and avoid leaving pet food out overnight.

Consider Professional Pest Treatments

If you're dealing with recurring pest problems, professional treatments can provide an extra layer of protection. Routine pest control services can help manage ants, spiders, mosquitoes, and other seasonal pests before they become a larger issue.

Protect Your Home All Summer Long

A little prevention goes a long way when it comes to keeping summer pests under control. Regular maintenance, attention to standing water, and proactive treatments can help you enjoy your home and outdoor spaces without the annoyance of unwanted visitors.

Keeping your property well-maintained not only makes summer more enjoyable, but it also helps protect one of your biggest investments—your home.
